Dr. Mark Steffen: Make annual vaccines part of your back-to-school routine
As kids head back to the classroom, many parents are adjusting family schedules for another busy school year. If that sounds familiar, I know there's a lot on your plate. That's why I'm here to remind you to make the time to add annual flu shots and updated COVID-19 vaccines to your family's fall routine as well.
Taking the simple step to schedule appointments now can help keep your family healthy and avoid disruptions to school, work, and the activities you enjoy later in the year.
After all, vaccines remain one of the most powerful tools we have to protect ourselves and our communities from serious illness. Decades of scientific research have shown they are safe and effective at preventing serious disease.
That's why I'm proud that Blue Cross remains steadfast in our commitment to help members access recommended vaccines and preventive care. Here's what our vaccine coverage looks like today:
Coverage for recommended vaccines
Blue Cross continues to cover all immunizations recommended by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), with no member cost-sharing. This includes COVID-19 vaccinations for members aged six months and older.
The decision to receive a vaccine is one that patients make in consultation with their healthcare provider. If you have questions about recommended vaccines for yourself or your child, talk with your doctor. They can help you understand current recommendations based on age, health history, and individual circumstances.
Preventive care screening information
Your annual preventive care visit is a great opportunity to review your health needs with your primary care physician. To make things easier, we've included screening and immunization information by age below.
Back-to-school is a good time to check in
Vaccines are just one part of helping children stay healthy and ready to learn. As families settle into new routines, it's a good time to focus on the habits that support overall well-being throughout the school year.
Encourage good handwashing habits, prioritize sleep, support healthy eating, and make time for regular physical activity. Small, consistent habits can help children stay healthy and perform their best both in and out of the classroom.
At Blue Cross, we believe healthy communities start with healthy families. As you prepare for the year ahead, I encourage you to take a moment to check in with your children about their physical and emotional well-being and make health a part of your back-to-school routine.
